Minister of Music Job Description
Title: Minister of Music Overview:
Create an atmosphere of celebration and reverence to God through music for all worship services. Lead and direct the Church music program to include choir(s), vocal, instrumental and other phases/expressions of musical experience. Foster an innovative, blended style of music to enhance and support the worship message goals. It is estimated that this position will require a commitment of between 10 and 12 hours per week.
Duties:
1.Worship Leader:
Provide inspiring and motivational music ministry during all worship services and BBC programs/events;
Lead the congregation, utilizing a variety of styles of music, including coaching for new songs unfamiliar to the congregation;
Spread vitality and engage the congregation through the musical worship experience;
Help bridge generational/cultural differences by selecting a balance of musical styles for every service which will, as a whole, have multi-generational appeal, and by briefly presenting the spiritual context of all music to the congregation in terms through which all generational and cultural perspectives can understand, relate and connect with God;
Assist in developing opportunities for Youth involvement in the worship service.
2.Music Ministry Leader:
Plan, organize and lead the music ministry.
Rehearse the Sanctuary Choir weekly, including a choir “warm up” just prior to each Sunday morning service the choir will serve in;
Lead and direct the various components of the music programs including the choir(s), vocal, instruments and other expressions of musical experience;
Teach, coach and mentor all music ministry team members to become life-long learners with respect to their musical talents as well as their spiritual development;
Rehearse or otherwise assure preparedness of all music ministry elements;
Mentor and coach interested members to become worship leaders or other forms of music ministry specialists, according to their calling;
Promote fellowship within and help recruit new volunteers into the music ministry;
Practice discipleship through inspiring and engaging music ministry.
3.Music Planner:
Collaborate with Pastor and Celebration/Worship Committee to select all worship music;
Utilize technology in planning and presenting music to enhance the worship message;
Work with Pastor to recruit and schedule special music to add variety to worship and supplement in-house music assets;
Arrange for and prepare music components for special worship programs for Christmas, Good Friday, Easter and 5th Sunday and Sunrise services, which may vary;
Meet with the Pastor and other relevant planning sessions as they may arise.
4.Music Administrator:
Meet deadlines for publication or other logistical considerations;
Maintain effective communications with Pastor, and praise team members;
Oversee the orderly maintenance of the music library and a database of hymns, praise music and anthems used in worship; (The actual filing, etc. can be delegated to a volunteer.)
Acquire the music, equipment and supplies required to perform designated duties in accordance with BBC financial policies;
Manage the music ministry budget and submit required reports, estimates and requests by specified deadlines;
Strictly adhere to BBC policies.
Qualifications:
1.Committed disciple of Jesus Christ, seeking to know, love and serve God & neighbor, and also committed to continual spiritual growth;
2.Passion and vision for including praise music along with upbeat traditional Christian music in worship ministry in order to contribute to worship vitality and multi-generational community;
3.Ability to lead, inspire and engage the congregation during the worship experience;
4.Music background by education or experience and teaching ability sufficient to coach and guide all the members of the music ministry to continually enhance their musical skills;
5.Familiarity with modern Christian music as well as more traditional styles of sacred music in a blended worship format;
6.Experience as a worship leader, preferably in a praise team situation, is required;
7.Experience directing musical ensembles is highly desired;
8.References from the Music Coordinator, SPRC Chair (or equivalent), and/or the Pastor of the candidate’s current church are required;
9.Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills required to effectively collaborate with both the church staff and administrators as well as the other members of the music ministry;
10.Experience working with youth, young adults and older adults;
11.Knowledge of Baptist theology and hymnody is desired;
Compensation:
1.Starting salary range will depend on qualifications and experience;
2.Continuing education stipend provided, with approval of BBC.
3.This is a part-time position and does not include pension or health care benefits.
